Novasep and Danisco develop the first process for the industrial production of betaine from a by-product of bioethanol
Monday, December 13, 2010Description :
Novasep Process, a bioprocess division of Novasep, a leading innovator in purification technologies for the life sciences industries, and Danisco, the world leader in food ingredients, enzymes and biotechnology solutions , Today announce the industrialization of an innovative process for the production of natural betaine. The production unit will be the first to use this new process for the extraction of vinasse, a by-product of the production of bioethanol from sugar beet. This new process will allow Danisco to significantly increase the quantity of natural betaine available on the market, a commodity commonly used in animal feed and currently in high demand.

Danisco has innovated in the research and introduction of natural betaine in animal nutrition in the early 1990s. The company has clearly demonstrated the superiority of natural betaine over synthetic alternatives. Unlike synthetic betaine, natural betaine acts as an osmolyte, which improves intestinal health and reduces the negative impact of heat stress on animal production. Today, demand for natural betaine exceeds supply. Betain from this new plant will be sold by Danisco under the Betafin (TM) brand.

This new process will not only increase the volume of available betaine but will also recycle the bioethanol vinasse (residues) from which betaine will be derived and sell it as fertilizer. Until now, it was possible to extract natural betaine only from sugar beet molasses, a by-product of sugar production. The impact of this new process will be more and more consistent as the growth of bioethanol production from beets will generate more and more vinasses.

Novasep Process is in charge of the design of the new industrial plant and will provide the production line that will combine NS2P technology, Danisco's proprietary chromatographic technology, with evaporation and membrane filtration steps. This project is the latest achievement of the FAST alliance between Novasep and Danisco in the field of extraction and purification of betaine, an alliance that has already led to the creation of several betaine production plants.

"I am delighted to take this new step in the long-standing collaboration between Novasep and Danisco," said Antoine Baule, President of Novasep Process, Novasep's bioprocess division. "By playing a key role in this project, Novasep is once again demonstrating its leadership in the development or industrialization of innovative processes for industrial biotech, and its ability to collaborate with leading customers and The long term in mutually fruitful partnerships. "

Juhani Kuusisto, Director of Operations in charge of betain supply at Danisco, added: "I am really pleased with our collaboration with Novasep Process. This new project demonstrates Danisco's ability to keep abreast of market developments and adapt its NS2P process to new raw materials. This process will significantly increase the amount of natural betaine available on the market. "

Danisco and Novasep will provide technology support to the betaine production plant with the support of De Smet Engineering and Contractors who will be in charge of the civil engineering of the new facility. Tereos, a global specialist in the production of sugar, starch and bioethanol, will supply the vinasses and operate the factory at its Origny sugar refinery (02-Aisne), France.
